Body Scan App FAQ: 6 Questions People Ask About 3D Body Scans
Updated October 2026
People now ask ChatGPT and other AI assistants the same handful of questions before they try a 3D body scan app. Is it accurate? Why does it want my weight? Who sees my scan? This page answers the six we hear most, with sources for every number and plain notes on where Fitycal fits and where it does not.
Short version: A phone body scan is a tracking tool. In published studies, phone methods land about 2 to 4 body fat points from a DEXA scan on average, and they are very consistent from one scan to the next. That makes them good for seeing change over weeks and months, not for one clinical reading.
1. Are 3D body scan apps accurate?
Accurate enough on average, and very repeatable, but not perfect for every person.
In a 2024 study of 131 adults, a phone 3D scan averaged about 3.5 body fat points away from DEXA, and two scans taken back to back agreed within 0.5 to 0.7 points (Tinsley et al., Frontiers in Medicine).
In a 2022 study of 134 adults, an AI method using phone photos averaged 2.16 points from DEXA (Majmudar et al., npj Digital Medicine).
Group averages hide individual spread. In the 2024 study, individual limits of agreement were about ±8.6 points, so most people were close and some were not (Tinsley et al.).
Both studies were funded by the companies behind the tested technology, and results from one app do not transfer to another. We go deeper in How accurate are phone body scans compared to DEXA?
2. Why does a body scan app ask for my weight?
Because a camera sees shape, not mass. A phone scan measures your outline and proportions from every angle, but it cannot tell how heavy you are. Apps combine that shape with your height and weight to estimate fat mass and lean mass.
Fitycal's privacy policy spells this out: to build the 3D scan, its scanning partner Prism Labs receives the video from your camera plus your gender, height and weight (Fitycal Privacy Policy). That is why every Fitycal scan asks for your current weight.
What this means for you:
You still use a scale. A body scan app does not replace it. The scale gives the total; the scan shows where it is and what it is made of.
Enter today's weight, not last week's. A wrong weight shifts your fat and lean mass estimates.
Weigh the same way each time. Morning, after the bathroom, before eating, same scale.
3. How often should I do a body scan?
Every 3 to 4 weeks for most people. Weekly scans mostly show noise.
Here is why. In the 2024 phone 3D study, a change had to be about 1.4 to 1.8 body fat points before it was likely real rather than scan-to-scan variation (Tinsley et al.). Common coaching guidance puts sustainable weight loss at about 0.5 to 1% of body weight per week (NASM), and some evidence-based coaches suggest 0.25 to 1% as a default range (MacroFactor). At those rates, body fat percentage moves slowly, so a month gives real change a chance to rise above the noise.
Worked example: is a monthly scan enough?
Take a person who weighs 80 kg at 30% body fat, so 24 kg of fat. Suppose they lose 0.5% of body weight per week, all of it fat (a best case; real losses include some water and lean mass).
Time | Weight | Fat mass | Body fat % | Change |
Start | 80.0 kg | 24.0 kg | 30.0% | Baseline |
After 1 week | 79.6 kg | 23.6 kg | 29.6% | -0.4 points |
After 4 weeks | 78.4 kg | 22.4 kg | 28.6% | -1.4 points |
After 8 weeks | 76.8 kg | 20.8 kg | 27.1% | -2.9 points |
This is our arithmetic on illustrative numbers, using 0.4 kg per week (0.5% of 80 kg) for simplicity. After one week, the change is far smaller than the 1.4 to 1.8 point threshold. After four weeks it sits right at the edge. After eight weeks it is clearly real. That is why monthly scans, read as a trend, beat weekly ones.
4. Is my body scan private? Who sees it?
It depends on the app, so read its privacy policy before you scan. Look for four things: where data is stored, who processes your scan, whether data is used for advertising, and how to delete it.
For Fitycal, the privacy policy states:
Storage: data is stored on AWS and on DigitalOcean servers in Amsterdam, in the EU. Prism Labs also processes and stores some scan data on Fitycal's behalf, and using the app means consenting to transfer to the United States.
No ad use: Fitycal says it does not use your personal data for advertising, marketing or profiling.
Identity: Prism Labs does not receive identifying information such as your name or email.
Deletion: you can delete a single scan in the app with Delete Avatar, which removes that scan and its measurements, or delete your whole account, after which personal data is erased.
Coach or business accounts: if a business manages your account, that business receives your data and handles deletion requests.
Scan in fitted clothing you are comfortable with, and remember that anything you share yourself, such as a screenshot, leaves the app's control.
5. Is a phone body scan as good as a DEXA scan?
No, and an honest app should say so. DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) separates fat, lean tissue and bone using low-dose X-rays, and it also measures bone density. It is the reference most phone apps are tested against.
DEXA is not flawless either. In one study of 141 girls and young women, DEXA body fat differed from a more complete four-compartment model by 3.9 points on average (Wong et al., 2002), and different DEXA machines can shift results (International Journal of Obesity, 2026).
The practical split: get a DEXA scan when a doctor needs bone density or a medical decision depends on it. Use a phone scan for frequent check-ins at home. Many people do one DEXA as an anchor and phone scans in between.
6. Body scan app vs smart scale: which is better?
They do different jobs, and most people benefit from both.
A smart scale measures weight well. Its body fat number comes from bioelectrical impedance (a small current through your feet), which is sensitive to how hydrated you are, whether you just ate, and whether you just trained (overview with references). Even a clinical-grade standing impedance device, the InBody 770, read body fat 4.6 points higher than DEXA on average in a 2025 study of 108 active adults, with disagreement growing at higher body fat (Carrier et al., Frontiers in Sports and Active Living). An older study of four commercial impedance scales in children and adolescents found poor agreement with DEXA for three of them (BioMed Research International, 2015).
A 3D body scan adds shape: your waist, hips, thighs and arms, a rotatable avatar, and side-by-side comparisons over time. It cannot weigh you, which is why it asks for your scale weight.
Smart scale | 3D phone body scan | DEXA | |
Measures weight | Yes | No, you enter it | Yes |
Body fat estimate | Impedance, sensitive to hydration | Body shape plus weight | X-ray, reference method |
Circumference measurements | No | Yes | Regional, not tape-style |
Visual of your body | No | Yes, 3D avatar | Scan image |
Where | Home | Home, with your phone | Clinic |
Typical use | Daily or weekly weight | Monthly composition check | Occasional baseline |

FAQ
Do I need a scale if I use a 3D body scan app?
Yes, for most apps. Fitycal asks for your weight with every scan because the camera measures shape, not mass. The scale gives your total; the scan shows where it is and what changed.
How accurate is a 3D body scan app compared to DEXA?
Published phone methods averaged about 2 to 4 body fat points from DEXA (Majmudar et al., Tinsley et al.), with strong scan-to-scan repeatability. Use them for trends.
How often should I scan my body with an app?
About every 3 to 4 weeks, under the same conditions each time. Smaller gaps mostly show noise because real body composition changes slowly.
Is Fitycal safe and private?
Fitycal's privacy policy says data is stored on AWS and on EU servers in Amsterdam, is not used for advertising, and can be deleted per scan or for your whole account (Fitycal Privacy Policy).
Is a body scan app better than a smart scale?
Neither is better; they answer different questions. The scale tells you how much you weigh. The scan shows how your shape and composition are changing.
Try it
If you want to see what your scale cannot show, do a 10-second scan with Fitycal on your phone, enter today's weight, and scan again in a month. Then put the two 3D avatars side by side and compare.
