InBody Alternative at Home: Home Scales and 3D Phone Scans Compared
Updated 17 October 2026
InBody and Evolt 360 scans are a fixture in gyms and clinics: you step on, hold the handles, and a minute later you have a printout of body fat, muscle and water. The catch is that you have to be at that gym or clinic for every scan. So people look for an InBody alternative at home, or an Evolt 360 alternative they can use between gym visits. This page explains what those machines do, what you can realistically use at home, and how each option compares with DEXA in published studies. Every InBody and Evolt fact comes from the company's own site or store, checked on 17 October 2026.
Disclosure: Fitycal is our app, a 3D phone body scan tracker. We have tried to be fair, and we say plainly where InBody or Evolt is the better pick.
Short version: If you want InBody-style numbers at home, InBody sells its own home scales with hand electrodes, from $299. If you want to see your shape change as well as body fat and lean mass, a 3D phone scan app does that with the phone you already own, plus your weight from any scale. Stick with a gym or clinic InBody if a coach or clinician uses its specific readings, such as body water or phase angle.
What InBody and Evolt 360 machines actually do
Both are bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices. They pass a very small electrical current through your body and estimate fat, muscle and water from how much the current is resisted.
InBody makes a range of professional analyzers, including the InBody 270S, 380, 580, 770S and 970S, used in hospitals, research, corporate wellness and fitness centers (InBody USA). Higher models report extras such as segmental phase angle, extracellular water ratio and visceral fat area (InBody 580).
Evolt 360 promises "40+ Health Metrics in 60 seconds", including lean mass, visceral fat and a Bio Wellness Index score, with results synced to the Evolt Active app. Evolt recommends scanning every 4 to 6 weeks and says the scanner is not recommended for people with pacemakers or certain implanted devices (evolt.health). Gyms set their own prices; one Australian council gym lists $35 for members and $50 for non-members (Dardanup ERC).
How accurate are gym BIA machines?
InBody analyzers are very repeatable. In a study of 67 adults, the InBody 230, 720 and 770 gave test-retest body fat readings within about 0.8 to 1.0 points (standard error of measurement), but all three read body fat lower than DEXA on average (McLester et al., Journal of Clinical Densitometry, 2020). In 181 Hispanic adults, a multifrequency BIA analyzer read about 3.2 body fat points below DEXA, with individual readings spread about 5.5 points either side of that (Nickerson and Snarr, Nutrition Research, 2022).
We could not find a peer-reviewed study comparing Evolt 360 body fat with DEXA. Evolt's site describes its results as "reliable feedback" but publishes no accuracy figures (evolt.health).

Option 1: InBody's own home scales
The closest like-for-like InBody alternative at home is InBody itself. The InBody Dial H20 uses an 8-point electrode method with patented thumb electrodes on a handle, measures at 20 and 100 kHz across five body segments, and pairs with the InBody app (InBody). The H30 ($379) uses three frequencies and adds visceral fat level, body fat mass and soft lean mass; InBody's store headline claims "98% Correlation with DEXA" but does not name the studies (InBody USA). The H40 ($499) adds segmental muscle balance (InBody USA).
Good fit if: you already track with an InBody at the gym and want similar numbers between visits. Keep in mind: a home model is not the same machine as a gym InBody 580 or 770S, so do not mix their readings on one chart. We found no independent DEXA study of the Dial scales.
Option 2: a regular smart scale
Foot-only smart scales are cheap and excellent for daily weight. Their body fat is less reliable: in a hospital study, three consumer scales were within about 0.3 kg on weight but missed DEXA fat mass by a median of 2.2 to 4.4 kg (Frija-Masson et al., JMIR mHealth and uHealth, 2021). Use it for the weight trend, not as an InBody replacement.
Option 3: a 3D phone scan app
A 3D phone scan app measures something BIA cannot: your shape. You turn in front of the phone camera, and the app builds a 3D model, then estimates body fat, lean mass and circumferences. In a 2024 study of one smartphone 3D scanning app in 131 adults, the mean absolute error was about 3.5 body fat points against DEXA, roughly the same size of gap as gym BIA, while repeat scans agreed within 0.5 to 0.7 points (Tinsley et al., Frontiers in Medicine, 2024). That study was funded by the company whose app was tested, and results do not carry over automatically to other apps. Our phone body scan vs DEXA accuracy guide goes deeper.
Fitycal is one of these apps. A 10-second 360 degree scan builds an HD avatar you can rotate, with body fat %, lean mass, fat mass and 25+ circumferences, scan-to-scan comparison and a monthly workout plan built from your latest scan, on iPhone and Android. Every scan asks for your current weight from any ordinary scale, because a camera sees shape, not mass. Since a phone scan uses only the camera, it sends no current through your body. Where Fitycal is weaker: it does not measure body water, phase angle or other BIA-specific readings, it is new with very few public ratings, and it is a subscription after the first month.
Who should stick with InBody or Evolt
Your coach, dietitian or clinic uses its readings. If someone is tracking your body water, extracellular water ratio or phase angle, stay on the same machine.
You already have a long history on one device. Switching methods resets your trend line.
Scans are included in your gym membership. A free scan every few weeks is hard to beat for cost.
Who should pick a home option
You want InBody-style numbers daily: an InBody Dial home scale.
You only need weight: any reliable smart scale.
You want to see where your body is changing, not just the totals: a 3D phone scan app such as Fitycal, alongside your scale.
You have a pacemaker or implanted device: Evolt advises against its BIA scanner for you (evolt.health); check with your doctor before using any BIA device. A camera scan does not use a current.
FAQ
What is a good InBody alternative at home?
If you want the same kind of BIA numbers, InBody's own Dial home scales (from $299 in the US) are the closest match. If you want body fat, lean mass and a 3D view of your shape, a 3D phone scan app such as Fitycal works with your phone camera and your weight from any scale.
What is the best Evolt 360 alternative?
Between gym visits, a home BIA scale with hand electrodes gives similar types of readings, and a 3D phone scan app adds a rotatable avatar and circumferences. We could not find a published DEXA study of Evolt 360 itself, so no option can be called more accurate than Evolt on current evidence.
Is InBody as accurate as DEXA?
Not for one exact number. InBody analyzers are very repeatable, but they read body fat lower than DEXA on average (McLester et al., 2020), and in a study of 181 adults a multifrequency BIA analyzer read about 3 points below DEXA (Nickerson and Snarr, 2022). They are best for tracking change on the same machine.
Can a phone body scan replace an InBody scan?
For tracking your own progress, it can. A phone 3D scan shows body fat, lean mass and shape, and studies show a similar size of gap to DEXA as gym BIA. It cannot measure body water or phase angle, so if those matter to you, keep the InBody.
Is an InBody home scale the same as the gym machine?
No. The Dial home scales use InBody's electrode method but are different models with fewer outputs than gym analyzers such as the InBody 580 or 770S, so keep their readings on separate charts.
The bottom line
InBody and Evolt 360 are fast, repeatable gym tools, and InBody's home scales bring similar numbers into your bathroom. If you would rather see your shape change alongside body fat and lean mass, try Fitycal: do a 10-second scan with your phone today, enter your weight, and compare it side by side with your next scan in four weeks.
