Noom Body Scan vs Fitycal: An Honest Noom Body Scan Alternative Guide
Updated 15 October 2026
Noom, best known for its weight loss program, now includes a phone body scan. You record a 10-second video and get a 3D model of your body plus body fat, lean mass and other numbers. This page compares Noom's body scan with Fitycal side by side, using Noom's own announcements and store listings for every Noom fact.
Disclosure: Fitycal is our app. We have tried to be fair, and we say plainly where Noom is the better pick.
Short version: Pick Noom if you want a full weight loss program (food logging, lessons, coaching, optional GLP-1 access) and the scan is a bonus. Pick Fitycal if the scan is the main thing: a 360 degree phone scan, an HD avatar you can rotate, 25+ measurements, side by side scan comparisons and a monthly workout plan built from your latest scan.
Looking for a Noom body scan alternative? What Noom's scan actually does
Here is what Noom has said about its scan, in its own words where possible:
Launch and partner. Noom announced the in-app body scan on 17 October 2024, built with the AI company Prism Labs, as a way to watch muscle mass while people lose weight on GLP-1 medication (Noom press release, October 2024).
How it works. You record a 10-second video in the Noom app. The AI analyses it, estimates your body composition and builds a personalized 3D body avatar (same source).
What it reports. Body fat percentage, fat mass, lean mass and waist-to-hip ratio at launch. In January 2025 Noom added a report with basal metabolic rate, body measurements, a "Noom Body Age" score and a "Future Me" 3D model that predicts your shape at your goal weight (Noom press release, January 2025).
Who gets it. At first only Noom Healthy Weight and Noom Med subscribers. Since January 2025, Noom says the scan is free for both free and paid members (January 2025 release).
Status. The App Store listing says the face and body scan is for educational use only and is not a medical device (Noom on the App Store).
What the scan is bundled with matters more than the scan itself. Noom is a full program: AI food logging, step tracking, daily lessons, meal plans, fitness classes, optional coaching, and access to GLP-1 medication through Noom Med for eligible people (App Store listing; Noom on Google Play). The scan sits inside that program.
How accurate is Noom's body scan?
Noom's 2024 release says the Prism Labs technology was third-party validated with Dr. Grant Tinsley of Texas Tech University, and reports repeat-scan variation of ± 0.20% for body fat percentage under the same conditions (October 2024 release). That is about consistency between repeat scans, not closeness to a lab test.
The published study of Prism Labs' smartphone scanning (131 adults, funded by Prism Labs) found the same split you see across phone scanners: very repeatable (ICC 0.996 to 0.997), but a mean absolute error of about 3.4 to 3.5 body fat points against DXA, with individual limits of agreement around 8.6 to 8.8 points (Tinsley et al., Frontiers in Medicine, 2024). Our phone body scan vs DEXA accuracy guide explains what that means in practice: phone scans, Fitycal included, are best for tracking your own trend, not for a single exact number.

Where Noom is the better choice
You want the whole program. If you want help with food, habits and lessons, Noom covers far more ground than any scan app, and the scan comes free on top.
You are on, or want, GLP-1 medication through one provider. Noom Med bundles prescription access (for eligible people) with the program. Fitycal does not prescribe anything.
Scale of feedback. Noom has hundreds of thousands of store ratings. Fitycal is new and has very few, so there is less public feedback to go on.
Price. A scan inside a free Noom account costs nothing.
One honest caveat for Android users: some Google Play reviewers report an "unsupported device" error on the body scan (Noom on Google Play), so check that it works on your phone before you rely on it.
Where Fitycal is the better choice
The scan is the point. Fitycal is built around the scan: a full 360 degree capture, an HD avatar you can turn, and 25+ measurements each time.
You want to see change, not just a number. Fitycal puts scans side by side so you can see where your waist, hips, arms or thighs changed, which is often the progress the scale hides.
You train. Fitycal builds a monthly workout plan from your latest scan, so the measurements lead to something you do next.
You already have a food or GLP-1 setup. If your nutrition app or prescriber is sorted, you may not want a second full program just to get a scan.
Fitycal was co-founded with Dr. Adil Tal, a doctor and coach.
Why every Fitycal scan asks for your weight
A phone camera sees shape, not mass. Fitycal combines your body shape with your current weight to estimate fat mass and lean mass, so each scan asks you to enter your weight. That also means a scale still has a place in your routine: the scan shows where change happened, the scale gives the total.
Worked example: reading a month of change
Say you weigh 82.0 kg at your first scan and 81.6 kg four weeks later. The scale says you lost 0.4 kg, which feels like nothing. Now suppose the two scans show body fat at 30% and then 29%:
Fat mass: 82.0 x 0.30 = 24.6 kg, then 81.6 x 0.29 = 23.7 kg, so about 0.9 kg less fat.
Everything else (lean mass): 57.4 kg, then 57.9 kg, so about 0.5 kg more.
These numbers are illustrative only. One point of body fat is within the error of any phone scan, so treat a single month like this as a hint, and look for the same direction over two or three scans before you call it a trend. That is exactly why consistent scans and side by side comparison matter more than any single reading.
How to get consistent scans on either app
Scan at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating.
Wear the same fitted clothing and use the same room and lighting.
Weigh yourself the same way each time before you enter your weight.
Scan every 2 to 4 weeks; body composition moves slowly.

FAQ
Looking for a Noom body scan alternative?
If the scan is what you care about, Fitycal is a dedicated alternative: a 10-second 360 degree phone scan, an HD rotatable avatar, 25+ measurements, side by side scan comparisons and a monthly workout plan. If you want a full weight loss program with food logging and optional GLP-1 access, staying with Noom makes more sense.
Is the Noom body scan free?
Noom said in January 2025 that the body scan and health report are free for both free and paid members (Noom, January 2025). The full program, coaching and Noom Med are paid.
How accurate is Noom's body scan compared to DEXA?
The study of the Prism Labs technology behind it found a mean absolute error of about 3.5 body fat points against DXA, with very high repeatability (Tinsley et al., 2024). That is similar to other phone scanners: good for trends, less precise for one exact number.
What is the difference between Noom body scan and Fitycal?
Noom's scan is one feature inside a weight loss program built around food, habits and optional GLP-1 medication. Fitycal is a dedicated body scan app: a 360 degree scan, 25+ measurements, side by side comparisons and a workout plan built from your scan.
Do I need a scale with a body scan app?
With Fitycal, yes: every scan asks for your current weight, which it uses to estimate fat mass and lean mass. Many scan apps rely on weight in a similar way.
The bottom line
Noom's body scan is a solid free extra if you already use Noom or want its full program. If what you really want is to see your body change, scan to scan, and train from it, try Fitycal: do a 10-second scan with your phone today, scan again in four weeks, and compare the two side by side.
