3D Body Scan App Without LiDAR: Which Apps Work on a Normal Phone Camera

Updated 20 October 2026

If you have a standard iPhone or an Android phone, you may have read that 3D body scanning needs a LiDAR sensor. For most body scan apps, it does not. This page explains which phones have LiDAR, which body scan apps need it, which work with an ordinary camera, and what you give up (or not) without a depth sensor. Every app fact comes from the app's own store listing or website, checked on 20 October 2026.

Disclosure: Fitycal is our app. It is one of the apps that works without LiDAR, and we say plainly where another app is the better pick.

Short version: Only Pro and Pro Max iPhones have LiDAR. Most body scan apps (ZOZOFIT, MeThreeSixty, Spren, Recomp AI and Fitycal) use the normal camera. Bodymapp uses the Face ID sensor instead, and a few apps, such as VZN 3D Body Scanner, really do require LiDAR.

Which phones have LiDAR?

Apple lists the LiDAR Scanner on these iPhones only: iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, and 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max (Apple Support). Standard, Plus, mini, SE and Air models are not on the list.

LiDAR is the small black dot in the rear camera bump. It measures depth by timing light pulses. It is different from the TrueDepth sensor behind Face ID, which is on the front of every Face ID iPhone, Pro or not.

The pattern is clear: if you want a body scan app on a phone without LiDAR, you have plenty of choice. LiDAR-only apps are the exception, and they are often built for a second person walking around you with the phone, as VZN describes.

How a camera scan builds a 3D avatar without a depth sensor

A depth sensor measures distance directly. A camera does not, so camera apps estimate shape instead. The general approach looks like this:

  1. You stand in view of the phone. In Fitycal, you prop the phone up, step back and turn a full circle for about 10 seconds. Other apps use two still poses (MeThreeSixty: front and side) or a guided 360 degree turn (ZOZOFIT).

  2. The app finds your outline from many angles. Software separates your body from the background in each frame or photo.

  3. A body model is fitted to those outlines. The app adjusts a 3D body shape until it matches what the camera saw, using details such as your height to set the scale.

  4. Measurements are read off the model. Waist, hips, chest, arms and thighs come from the fitted 3D shape.

  5. Your weight turns shape into composition. A camera sees shape, not mass. Combining the shape with the weight you enter lets the app estimate fat mass and lean mass.

Because the shape comes from outlines, the setup matters more than the sensor: good light, a plain background, fitted clothing and the same spot each time.

Is a LiDAR body scan more accurate?

Not necessarily for what most people want, which is a body fat and measurement trend. None of the apps above publishes a peer-reviewed study comparing its LiDAR or depth-sensor scan with camera scanning for body fat against DEXA on its site or listing, and we did not find one.

What research does show is that ordinary camera scanning can be consistent. A 2024 study of a smartphone 3D scanning app in 131 adults found an average error of about 3.5 body fat points against DXA, but repeat scans agreed within roughly half a point (Tinsley et al., Frontiers in Medicine, 2024). That makes camera scans useful for tracking your own change over time, less so for one exact number. Our phone body scan vs DEXA accuracy guide goes deeper.

Why every Fitycal scan needs your weight

Fitycal combines your body shape with your current weight to estimate fat mass and lean mass, so each scan asks you to enter your weight from any ordinary scale. You do not need a smart scale, but you do need a weight. The scan shows where change happened; the scale gives the total.

Which app should you pick?

  • You have an Android phone: Fitycal, ZOZOFIT or MeThreeSixty. Recomp AI, Spren, Bodymapp and VZN are iPhone only.

  • You have a standard iPhone (no LiDAR): any app in the table except VZN 3D Body Scanner.

  • You want a free plan with no time limit: ZOZOFIT or MeThreeSixty.

  • You have a Pro iPhone and a partner or trainer to scan you: VZN 3D Body Scanner is built for that.

  • You want a quick 360 degree scan, side by side comparisons and a workout plan built from your latest scan: Fitycal.

FAQ

Can I do a 3D body scan without LiDAR?

Yes. Most body scan apps, including Fitycal, ZOZOFIT, MeThreeSixty, Recomp AI and Spren, use the normal phone camera. LiDAR is only needed by a few apps, such as VZN 3D Body Scanner, which lists "LiDAR required" and iPhone 12 Pro or newer.

Does my iPhone have LiDAR?

Only Pro and Pro Max models from iPhone 12 Pro onwards have a LiDAR Scanner, according to Apple. Standard, Plus, mini, SE and Air models do not.

Is there a 3D body scan app for Android?

Yes. Fitycal, ZOZOFIT and MeThreeSixty all have Android apps on Google Play and scan with the phone camera. ZOZOFIT says it works on select Android devices, so check its supported device list first.

Is a LiDAR body scan more accurate than a camera scan?

We did not find published research showing that LiDAR body scan apps estimate body fat more accurately than camera apps. Studies of camera-based phone scanning show average errors of about 3 to 4 body fat points against DEXA but very consistent repeat scans, which is what matters for tracking change.

Does Bodymapp need LiDAR?

No. Bodymapp uses the TrueDepth sensor behind Face ID, so it works on Face ID iPhones from iPhone X onwards, Pro or not, but not on iPhone SE models or Android.

The bottom line

You do not need a Pro iPhone to scan your body in 3D. Pick an app that runs on the phone you already have and that you will use the same way each time. If you want a 10-second scan and side by side comparisons on iPhone or Android, try Fitycal: enter your weight, turn in front of your phone today, scan again in four weeks, and compare the two.
