Dr. Adil Hanafi, our CEO at FITYCAL, has a fascinating story that stretches continents, disciplines, and profound personal growth. From his early days as a physics student to his critical role in healthcare and fitness, Adil shares how his diverse background shaped his approach to technology and wellness.
Q: Could you start by telling us a bit about your academic and professional background?
Adil: My academic journey started with a deep fascination with physics. As a physics graduate, I dived into the complicated workings of the universe, studying matter, energy, and the fundamental forces.. This field taught me critical thinking and problem-solving skills through focused research, forming a strong foundation that I later applied in entirely different contexts.
Q: What led to your transition from physics to studying medicine, and how did that influence your career?
Adil: After initially going to Ukraine to continue my physics studies at the Zaporizhzhia State Medical University, I spent my first year learning the language at a medical university. Immersed in the medical environment, I found myself drawn to the field of medicine.. It was a changing moment where my surroundings and daily interactions with medical students and professionals ignited a new passion. With strong encouragement from my family, I decided to switch my focus to medicine, where I could use my analytical skills to have a more direct impact on people's lives.
Q: And how did your interest in medicine evolve into a broader engagement with fitness and wellness?
Adil: I’ve had a keen interest in fitness ever since I was 15, driven by a curiosity about my body and how I can enhance it. This hobby grew as I started coaching friends and later, fellow gym-goers. The transition was natural.. My curiosity about how things work led to both my passions for both fields. This, of course, was also motivated during my time as a general doctor, treating a wide range of conditions from routine check-ups to complex cases, where I realized the profound impact of lifestyle on health.. My medical insights enhanced my ability to design effective, personalized fitness programs, while my fitness experience enriched my understanding of physical healthcare.
Q: Transitioning countries and starting anew in the Netherlands sounds challenging. How did this experience lead to founding FITYCAL?
Adil: It was a big move, especially with the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. After the war started in 2022, I left the country, traveled across Europe from country to country.. It was an extraordinary journey for me. I eventually ended up in the Netherlands, where I found myself in a supportive environment to both continue my medical practice, as well as motivation to start a business after I expressed interest in trying to change the way people handle their health.. The first support came from my mentor Joan Westendorff, who guided me through the challenges of being an entrepreneur. Then, along the way, I found an opportunity in the shape of a team with just the perfect ingredients to make this vision work. This was real fortune.. Watching the idea grow into a business. Going from a good technology to a better one, and in turn, closer to our vision.. It keeps us on our toes in the best way imaginable.
Q: FITYCAL focuses on 3D body scanning technology. What specific aspects of this technology excite you the most?
Adil: I’m fascinated by how 3D scanning gives us a detailed look at the body in ways traditional methods can’t. It goes beyond the scale, showing us how the body changes over time. This depth of information can really transform how people manage their health, providing a clear picture of their progress and what they need to work on. Rather than looking at the mirror and assuming which areas I need to work on, I get to see actual numbers, measurements, and insights that push me to work on the right things.. You see, most people refer to either pictures, videos, or plain simple mirrors to assess their postures, physical dimensions… But this often is biased and undetailed. A 3D scan is neutral. It shows you as you are. And the work here, our objective, is to use this technology to also inform you of what you could do to achieve your goals in the shape of personalized, tailored, fitness and diet plans.
Q: With such innovative tools at your disposal, how do you envision impacting the health and fitness industry?
Adil: My goal with FITYCAL is to make detailed health data accessible to everyone. And more than that, I want this technology to be incorporated into a future vision of making fitness and its direct effect on body values as personalized as possible. By incorporating advanced 3D scans into our daily lifestyles, we can give people the insights they need to make informed decisions about their fitness and health. I see FITYCAL not just as a tool, but as a partner in our users' health journeys.
Q: Before we wrap up, could you share a personal or fun story that might give us more insight into who you are outside the professional world?
Adil: A fun story.. Here’s one; I’ve always been curious about how things work. I remember when I was very young, around 5 or 6 years old, at my grandparents’ house. I took the big clock from the wall in the living room and went under the table with it. I disassembled it into small pieces, trying to understand how the clock hands moved and what was inside. They caught me, of course. My grandparents were angry because it was a very special piece to them; they had it for many years before I came along, and I destroyed it trying to figure out how something, that I didn’t know at that age, worked. We still laugh about that today.. If anything, it’s a testament to how understanding the workings of things is etched in my brain ever since I developed a mind of my own.
Dr. Adil Hanafi has a unique background that combines physics, medicine, and fitness. Now at FITYCAL, he's using all he’s learned to help people take control of their health in new ways.
